Granddaddy

Granddaddy

How It Started...

"I Care CDC was established out of a heightened sense of responsibility to the community. I see the work as a ministry. A ministry of love, hope, freedom, and purpose. My inspiration comes from a number of personal experiences, as well as from two important individuals- my mother, Dr. Ethel Treadwell, and my grandfather, the late Reverend Joseph Treadwell, Sr.”

Mother is a woman of resilience. She introduced me to the helping profession. Mother didn’t see people with just her eyes. She viewed them with the love of God. Mother kept my siblings and I busy in volunteer work - feeding the hungry, clothing the needy, and supporting Special Olympics to name a few areas. My parents fostered children for over 15 years, and our home seemed to be a place of refuge for many. To this day, mother continues to see people through the eyes and love of Christ as she provides blankets and water to the homeless, and offer gift packages to cancer patients.

Granddaddy, as I passionately called him, was an Army Veteran who served in WWII. He loved people, and was known in the community among religious leaders and worked along the side of local politicians. Granddaddy spent countless hours sharing the importance and value of leadership and community involvement.  At the age of twelve, I recall the summons to join him for dinner at the home of Mayor James Seastrand, former longtime North Las Vegas Mayor. Perhaps this may have been the prelude to my community ministry. Granddaddy spent the last several years of his life in a nursing home. On every visit, he would request that I sing the hymn, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”- Lamentations 3:22-24. No matter how out of tune I might have sound, it seemed to place granddaddy in a place of serenity in which humbled and empowered me. As time progressed I began to see the loneliness behind his smile, as well as the challenges one may encounter while living in a nursing facility. Since that time, I’ve been an advocate of seniors, and Patient’s Rights.

Mother and granddaddy because of you, I see with my heart."
